This comparison was last reviewed in October 2026. Competitor features and pricing were checked against public documentation and pricing pages. nRouter is the publisher of this comparison. Pricing and features may change. Competitor rows reflect each vendor's publicly documented plans and docs as last checked in October 2026; each cell links the specific source. Where a competitor's pricing or plan structure is not public, the cell describes the structure rather than quoting a figure — we never invent competitor pricing. Found something out of date? - Helicone started as an observability platform that proxies requests to log and analyze them, and it now also offers a gateway product with routing and fallbacks — its homepage bills it as "AI Gateway & LLM Observability". It remains observability-first and bring-your-own-key: you supply the provider keys and endpoints. Since joining Mintlify (March 2026) the product is in maintenance mode. nRouter is a managed gateway instead: provider keys, credits, and billing are handled for you. - Helicone requires your own provider API keys; it logs the traffic flowing through its proxy. There is no managed provider-key model. Helicone (all plans) · Helicone docs — integrations · verified October 2026

FAQs
Is nRouter an alternative to Helicone?
It is a superset for production workloads. Helicone is observability-first: it proxies requests on your own provider keys to log and analyze them, and its gateway product adds routing and fallbacks. nRouter is a full LLM gateway that routes requests across 371+ models, featuring a pure Rust data plane, stateless zero-DB ML sidecar, FinOps FOCUS 1.4 tokenomics, built-in guardrails ($0 on blocked requests), team management, and budget controls — all through a single API key and a single bill.
Does nRouter include observability features like Helicone?
Yes, and it is a genuine peer comparison. nRouter includes built-in observability: request logging with search and filters, a per-request trace, CSV export, and alerting on budget and spend thresholds. Prompt and response text are never stored. You get observability inside a full gateway. No separate tool required.
Can I use nRouter without managing provider API keys?
Yes. That is the core architectural difference. With Helicone you still need your own API keys for every provider and manage billing with each. With nRouter you get one API key (NROUTER_API_KEY), buy credits, and call any model. We manage all provider keys, routing, and billing.
How does nRouter pricing compare to Helicone?
Helicone publishes a free tier with paid plans priced by logged-request volume and seats. nRouter pricing is simple: nRouter sells one plan, pay as you go, with a 0% platform fee and exact provider list prices ($5 minimum first purchase, $20 minimum repeat manual top-up). A credit purchase charges exactly the credits bought ($5 of credits costs $5.00, $100 costs $100.00). All features are included with pay as you go. We do not quote Helicone's figures. See the sourced footnotes under the comparison table for the public pricing source.
Do I still need Helicone if I use nRouter?
For most teams, no — nRouter includes built-in observability (request logs, analytics, alerts, and CSV export). If you already use Helicone, you can run both during a migration and compare request logs; nRouter does not forward request logs to external tools today. But the built-in observability replaces the need for a separate tool for most teams.
Is Helicone still actively developed after joining Mintlify?
Helicone joined Mintlify in March 2026, and the product is in maintenance mode (see the sourced footnote above). Nothing you rely on today stops working. If you want request-path enforcement Helicone does not document (hard 402 budget caps and inline PII redaction), moving to nRouter is additive: nRouter does not forward request logs to external tools today, so your existing observability sinks keep receiving what your own application sends them, and nRouter's logs stay in its dashboard with CSV export.
Are all nRouter features really included on every tier?
Every product feature — guardrails, prompt management, A/B tests, evals, observability, RBAC, SSO/SAML, audit logs, per-team budgets, and priority support — is included with pay as you go. nRouter sells one plan with a 0% platform fee, exact provider list prices ($5 minimum first purchase, $20 minimum repeat manual top-up), and standard limits of 200 RPM, 200k TPM, and 5 concurrent requests. Nothing is gated behind a subscription.
Is Helicone an AI gateway?
Helicone is primarily positioned around LLM observability, request logging, analytics, cost tracking, and monitoring workflows. Whether it is the right gateway for a specific architecture depends on the current product and deployment documentation.
Can nRouter route between providers?
Yes. nRouter can route across eligible models and providers from its live catalogue using configured routing and fallback policy, while recording the selected path and outcome.
Can nRouter block requests before provider spend?
nRouter guardrails and budget checks run in the request path before provider dispatch. A blocked or over-budget request can be refused before inference spend is authorized, subject to the configured policy.
Does nRouter track cost per team?
Yes. nRouter records request usage and cost with key, team, organization, model, provider, latency, and outcome attribution surfaces.
Can nRouter and Helicone be used together?
You can run both during a migration and compare request logs, cost, and latency. nRouter does not forward request logs to Helicone or other external tools today; validate headers, streaming behavior, and retention before production. The documented nRouter gateway path is Application → nRouter → Provider.
